1.    Purposes::

Pig ear tattooing is aimed to help farmers identify the pig ear code easily, which helps a lot in the subsequent selection and management of pigs.

Therefore, it should be done seriously and accurately. Pig ear tattooing helps farmers identify the pig ear code of a pig faster and with less confusion than pig ear piercing or pig ear tag. As a result of that, it become more convenient to manage the pigs, avoid losing ear tags of sows or boars while moving them to another pen.

In addition, pig ear tattooing also helps to closely manage the company's assets, prevent pigs raised in the company’s farms from being swapped, that causes damage to the company.

2.    Principles:

This process must be followed by any staff. 

1. Notebook for recording
2. Tattooing set: tattoo pliers, a needle set including numbers and letters, and tattoo ink.
3. Brush: used for applying tattoo ink.
4. Alcohol 70% or povidine.
5. Gloves

• Pig ear tattooing needs to be done when the piglet is 3 days old and at the same time with teeth grinding, tail cutting, etc.
• Before tattooing, prepare a notebook for recording, determine the batches of pigs to have their ears tattooed, and accurately determine the number and letters to be tattooed to avoid mistakes.
• Before tattooing, check the pigs’ health conditions to make sure that they are healthy, strong, not infected. In case the tattooing cannot be done because the pigs are weak or have diseases (especially infectious diseases), the Farm Manager should report to the Supervisor for instructions on handling, and the production management board will ask the BOD for approval of not doing the tattooing if required. 
• Before tattooing, use alcohol to disinfect the tattooing set including: tattoo pliers, tattoo needles with numbers and letters.
• Make sure the tattooing set meets quality standards, are specialized for pigs, and clean.
• The tattoo pliers, the set of letters and numbers are not warped, rusty, dusty.
• The tattoo ink is specialized for pigs, has a clear origin and antiseptic properties to avoid infection for pigs after tattooing.

• Identify the letters and number to be tattooed: this step needs to be done carefully and requires high accuracy because it is almost impossible to change a tattoo after it is done.
• Insert the numbers and letters into the needle pad of the tattoo pliers, then apply the ink on the ink pad (the ink pad of the pliers), pay attention to check the fastening of the needle holder to deliver correct clear numbers and letters.
• Pick the pig to be tattooed and disinfect the pig's ears before tattooing.
• Place the tattoo pliers on the pig's ear, strongly press the pliers to make the tattoo needles go through the pig's ear. After the needles penetrate the pig's ear, the pressure of the needle pad will make the ink enter the tattoo. After pressing, use a brush to spread the tattoo ink on the the pig's ear again to make sure the tattoo is clear and bold. 
• Tattooing should be done on the right ear of the pig. After the tattooing is done, the pig ear code should be viewed “from the back to the front of the pig”.

After performing the above steps, the pig ear tattooing is completed. Release the pig back into the nursery pen. 
Note: The tattoo pliers are placed properly when the tattoo needle pad is located on the front of the pig's ear, and the ink pad is on the back of the pig's ear. 
In order to have a long-lasting clear tattoo, push the brush hard to the tattoo on the pig's ear to force the tattoo ink to penetrate into the tattoo needle holes on the pig's ear.
